Abstract

Talkhīṣ al-Mustadrak, authored by Shams al-Dīn Dhahabī, is a critical work addressing "al-Mustadrak ʿalā al-Ṣaḥīḥayn" by Ḥākim Naysābūrī. Given the distinguished status of the two Ṣaḥīḥs among Sunni hadith scholars, Ḥākim Naysābūrī’s claim that 8,803 hadiths conform to the criteria of Bukhārī and Muslim but are not included in their Ṣaḥīḥs and were therefore collected in
al-Mustadrak prompted extensive criticism from hadith scholars. Among these critical works, Dhahabī’s Talkhīṣ al-Mustadrak is regarded as one of the most important. Employing a descriptive-analytical approach and identifying the most frequently used technical terms in Talkhīṣ al-Mustadrak, the present study reexamines and analyzes Dhahabī’s hadith methodology in this work and investigates the criteria he employed to affirm, criticize, or omit hadiths. The findings indicate that authentication and weakening based on the principles and foundations of impeachment and validation to which Dhahabī adhered constitute his principal method for evaluating hadiths. In certain instances, Dhahabī affirms Ḥākim’s assessments using terminology associated with validation, whereas in other cases he critiques hadiths through the application of impeachment terminology. Notably, Dhahabī omitted 143 hadiths entirely and remained silent regarding 825, offering neither explicit acceptance nor rejection. This silence suggests, at minimum, that he found insufficient grounds to accept these reports.
